Capoeira in Imbassai

Preserve traditions: Capoeira projects in Bahia

The martial art Capoeira is a mixture of dance and fighting elements and has become a worldwide recognized sport. If you are on a trip to Brazil, you should take the opportunity to try Capoeira yourself. The most important basic steps can already be learned in one day on a vacation in Brazil, for example by visiting a Capoeira school in the beach resort Imbassai, which is one of the highlights of Brazil and should not be missing on an active Brazil trip.

Capoeira has its origin in Africa and was brought to Brazil by former African slaves. Due to below-average living conditions, a high level of dissatisfaction among the black population developed. This often resulted in fierce arguments and physical confrontations. But through Capoeira the slaves could reduce their aggressions without hurting other people and disguise their quarrels as "dance". However, the sport was not always as popular as it is today, because until 1937 it was still considered an inferior tradition of the dark-skinned population and was even forbidden by law. Only after the abolition of this law, the way to today's Capoeira was paved.

The Pousada Canto de Imbassai supports the project all year round with trips and group tours to Capoeira meetings. The Pousada also sponsors the catering at the regularly held events. Only recently, from 06. March - 08. March, the 16th Batizado (Capoeira baptism) of this year took place in Imbassai. This event, which is mainly about belt examinations, started on Friday with a Capoeira round in Diogo, a small beach village about 100 kilometers away from Salvador de Bahia. Afterward, the technical examinations of different Capoeira disciplines took place in the evening. Even a power failure could not prevent the participants from successfully passing their exams. It was improvised and under candle and flashlight, the belt examinations were finally held. The event continued on Saturday evening with a round of Capoeira. During this event the ceremonial awarding of the belts took place. On Sunday, March 08, the International Women's Day, there was a Capoeira round only for women, where the new belts were used for the first time. At the end of the day, the participants were rewarded with a hearty feijoada. This is a stew of beans, pork or beef, and many other ingredients, which is considered the national dish in Brazil and should be tried during a round trip in Brazil.

Only those who come to the training regularly were allowed to participate in the tests. This year's donation from Aventura do Brasil was used to fund ten of these belts. The leaders of the project expressed their gratitude with a video message and added that the belt handover was a very important motivational factor for the children and young people. Brazilian tourists who decide to see the project on-site and want to train Capoeira themselves also support the group. This is because 50 percent of the participation fees due go directly to the group. Besides Capoeira, Imbassai, as one of the tourist centers on the northeast coast of Brazil, has a lot more to offer. The landscape, consisting on the one hand of a jungle-like ambiance and on the other hand of beautiful sandy beaches, makes this place and the exploration of nature a sensation of a Brazil vacation. For example, the beach Praia de Imbassai with its coconut trees, dunes, rivers, and reefs is one of the highlights of this region.

An optimal opportunity to get an insight into the world of Capoeira is also a rental car tour through Brazil. On the tour from Recife to Salvador da Bahia, the participants spend two nights in the Pousada Canto de Imbassai and on a day off in Imbassai have the chance to join a Capoeira lesson. Afterward, those who are not yet fully occupied with sports can enjoy a canoe trip on the arms of the river Imbassai and enjoy the national parks and the surrounding area with its diverse flora, fauna, and animal world. You can end the day with a ride on the beach or in the hammock of the pousada. Who prefers a longer stay in Imbassai, can individually combine various Brazil travel components or directly access the hiking paradise Brazil Tour. Besides Imbassai, the colonial city of Salvador and the Chapada Diamantina National Park can be explored.
