Compulsory Mask in Brazil – Current Status

March 24, 2022
Brazil trips and compulsory masks

In the course of a successful vaccination campaign, falling rates of hospitalisation, and decreasing corona figures, 22 Brazilian capitals have removed the obligation to use mouth/nose protection. There, using face masks became optional for Brazil travelers too. In 8 of these cities, the liberation is valid outdoors and indoors. In the other 14 capitals, the liberation is valid only outdoors. In 5 capitals the obligation to use mouth/nose protection indoors and outdoors remains unchanged.

According to the scientist Julio Croda from Fiocruz, the measure is appropriate, but should constantly be reviewed or rather taken back, so as not to stress the Brazilian health system excessively.

What applies where?

The compulsory mask is nullified in public open spaces

  • in the 14 capitals Belo Horizonte, Cuiabá, São Luís, Boa Vista, Macapá, Campo Grande, Vitória, Teresina, Rio Branco, Manaus, Goiânia, Fortaleza, Curitiba, and João Pessoa.
  • in the 9 federal states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Amazonas, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Norte, Acre, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul.

The compulsory mask is nullified outdoors as well as indoors

  • in the 8 capitals São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Natal, Maceió, Porto Velho, Florianópolis, Porto Alegre, and Brasília.
  • in the 8 federal states of Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Rondônia, Alagoas, Maranhão, and São Paulo.
  • in the Distrito Federal.

Mouth/nose protection remains compulsory

  • in the 5 capitals Recife, Aracaju, Belém, Palmas, and Salvador.
  • in the 9 federal states of Sergipe, Bahia, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Roraima, Tocantins, Amapá, and Pará. In Sergipe, a vote about the liberation of masks will shortly take place. In Bahia, there are considerations to nullify compulsory masks in April.

At airports

Despite easings or rather the cancelation of compulsory masks in many federal states and municipalities, the Brazilian health authority ANVISA decided to maintain the obligation to use mouth/nose protection at airports and in aeroplanes. This applies to all areas with limited access for passengers and airport employees, as for example during boarding when people of various origins and partly without full vaccination come together in confined spaces which do not allow to keep a minimum distance. In areas with uncontrolled access, including airport halls and car parks, the use of masks is optional for Brazil vacationers as well.
