Tourism Industry in Brazil Creates 3.6 Million Jobs

Currently, 3.7 percent of Brazil's gross domestic product (GDP) is generated through tourism. The government in Brasilia has now decided to further expand the tourism sector and create 3.6 million new jobs. Experts estimate that the number of tourists will increase from 5.8 million in 2012, with 6.2 million visitors expected in 2013, to 7.9 million in 2016.
Thus, investments in the tourism industry by leading banks, such as the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social, or BNDES for short), the Banco do Brasil and the Savings Bank (Caixa Econômica Federal, or CAIXA for short) have increased by 30 percent to 11.2 billion reais (approx. 42 billion euros). According to the Ministry of Tourism, the three upcoming major events World Youth Day 2013, the Football World Cup in 2014, and the Olympics in 2016 will help to significantly improve the country's infrastructure and tourism services. This in turn will establish Brazil as one of the main travel destinations worldwide.
