The small charming Pousada do Rio is located on the outskirts of the village of Barreirinhas in the northern state of Maranhao, right next to the river Rio Preguicas. The tropical garden of the Pousada offers its guests peace and relaxation. Barreirinhas has its own national airport and offers the perfect starting point for day trips to the National Park Lencois Maranhenses. The region is the only desert in Brazil and its dunes extend from the sea to 25 miles (40 km) into the mainland. In the right time of the year you can observe large lagoons and many birds and turtles, that lay their eggs on the local beaches.
In Barreirinhas there you find some traditional restaurants and shops.
