Protecting the Hyacinth Macaws of the Pantanal: The “Adopt a Nest” Project

Brazil’s Pantanal is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world – and home to one of its most remarkable bird species: the hyacinth macaw (Arara Azul). Yet, increasing environmental threats such as wildfires and habitat loss are putting the breeding and survival of these majestic birds at serious risk. This is where the “Adote um Ninho” (“Adopt a Nest”) campaign by the Instituto Arara Azul steps in – with dedication, proven results, and room for meaningful participation. A visit to the project is also a wonderful experience during a Brazil vacation.
Why Artificial Nest Boxes Save Lives
During the 2024–2025 breeding season, 112 macaw nests were monitored in the Caiman region. Of these, 29 were adopted – a crucial contribution to financing the monitoring, maintenance, and care of the nesting sites. The results speak for themselves:
• 56% of fledglings hatched in artificial nest boxes
• 48% of fledglings that successfully flew came from adopted nests
• 37% of eggs and 50% of chicks were laid and born in these monitored nests
Despite a challenging year marked by wildfires and environmental stressors, targeted monitoring, veterinary care, and protective measures led to significantly improved breeding success. Thanks to these efforts, 25 fledglings survived – a number that truly offers hope.
Where Science Meets Collective Effort
“Adote um Ninho” is not only a conservation initiative, but also a powerful example of collaboration between science, civil society, and global supporters. Behind the campaign is a dedicated team of biologists, veterinarians, educators, and volunteers. Their work includes:
• Installing and maintaining artificial nest boxes
• Monitoring and data collection throughout the breeding season
• Environmental education in local communities
• Raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity
How the Nest Adoption Works
By adopting a nest, supporters actively contribute to species protection. Donations go directly toward research, the construction of new nesting boxes, protective measures, and nest monitoring. Sponsors receive regular updates on their adopted nest and become part of the story of a macaw chick’s survival. Some fostered chicks, like the lovingly named “Sorriso” (Smile), even grow up knowing that people far beyond the Pantanal helped support their life journey.
Why This Project Matters
“Adote um Ninho” is a model for effective species conservation, combining practical action with community engagement. It not only strengthens the population of hyacinth macaws but also benefits countless other species in the Pantanal ecosystem. After all: protecting nests means protecting habitats.
A Strong Message for Nature
The “Adopt a Nest” campaign proves that small actions can make a big impact. Whether you’re planning a Brazil trip or want to support conservation from afar, this project offers a meaningful way to protect biodiversity and invest in the future. At Aventura do Brasil, we proudly recommend supporting initiatives like this – because responsible travel also means giving something back to the land.
