Ilha do Mel is located in the Paranagua Bay in the Southeast of Brazil. The island has about 1,000 inhabitants on an area of 11 square miles (28 square kilometers). Most of the 28 miles (35 kilometers) of beaches are wild and pristine. Praia da Fortaleza is deserted, while Encantadas has more life and bustle. Praia Grande offers the best waves for surfers. Ilha do Mel consists of two parts, Encantadas and Nova Brasilia, which are connected by a narrow strip of sand that floods at high tide. The number of visitors is limited to 5,000 per day and 95 percent of the island's territory is under UNESCO protection. A beautiful sight is the lighthouse "Farol das Conchas." From its top you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view. The subtropical climate offers warm to hot weather year round with consistently pleasant water temperatures averaging at 73 °F (23 °C). Especially in the summer and fall from December to May, Ilha do Mel is well suited for a beach getaway. Daytime high temperatures at that time are between 75 °F (24 °C) and 84 °F (29 °C), and very seldom does the temperature drop to 59 °F (15 °C). However, this is also the time with the most rain. Those who want to avoid the rain and therefore accept lower temperatures of 55 °F (13 °C) to 73 °F (23 °C) should plan their visit from June to November.
