Jericoacoara: Hang Loose - Hang Out in Vacation Paradise

October 09, 2017
Relaxing in Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara is still considered an insider tip among Brazil travelers

The small town is located in the wild northeast of Brazil, about 300 kilometers west of Fortaleza, embedded like an oasis in a wondrous dune landscape. The entire area was declared a nature reserve in the mid-80s. At the same time, the "Washington Post Magazine" named the beach of Jericoacoara one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. Since then, tourism has determined the life of the people in this former fishing village.
But has so much changed since then? Of course, tourism brought some changes quite fast, like electricity, telephone, and running water. This was followed by some cute cafés and small restaurants. Today, in the small village center, you can find various providers for various leisure activities, such as horseback riding, dancing, or water sports.
However, "Jeri", as the place is affectionately called, has retained its very own and original charm. Thus one looks in vain for tarred roads or hotel complexes until today. Instead, wild donkeys still trot quite relaxed over the sandy paths, past the cozy pousadas.
The atmosphere there is really unique and above all - totally casual. There is probably no better place to come down and leave the daily routine behind. The digital nomads who have been meeting here in camps for a few years now to decelerate together and work in a relaxed environment, regardless of location, also appreciate this.
The only effort that should be part of the obligatory program in Jeri is the evening walk to the "Duna do Pôr do Sol". There you can marvel at probably the most beautiful sunset in Brazil.
When the sun has disappeared, you just let yourself roll down the dune and you are directly on the beach, where half of the village has gathered. Capoeira is danced to handmade Brazilian rhythms and Caipirinha is drunk. Later we go to one of the alternative beach bars or with the village youth to the Forró, a typical dance for the northeast - really impressive.
If you've relaxed enough the next day and are looking for some action, then Jeri is the place to be. Because Jericoacoara is probably, together with Florianopolis, the surf spot in Brazil. If you don't know how to surf yet, you should learn it here. Especially kite- and windsurfers get their money's worth because of optimal wind conditions. By the way, the constant wind also means that you can safely leave your bug spray in your suitcase.
Enough surfing? Then let's go, by horse or beach buggy over the dunes, discover the surrounding national park. But be careful: Don't forget your sunscreen! In any case, you should also visit the nearby freshwater lagoons. At Lagoa do Paraíso, for example, the name says it all, because it's paradise there! Far too often nowadays "powdered sugar sand" is promised, but there the sand is almost as white as powdered sugar and so fine that it squeaks under your feet. There is hardly a better place to let your soul dangle at the same time as your body. Because the best thing there are the hammocks that are set up in the water. Just hang out with a fresh Agua de Coco and greet the beach boys and girls with a "Hang Loose".
