Pousada

Local accommodations in Brazil, called Pousadas, are mostly family-run small inns. The Portuguese verb "pousar" stands for "land" and "rest" in the meaning of "relax". Popular destinations generally have pousadas in all quality and price categories, some with twenty or more rooms. Generally, however, Pousadas have no more than ten guest rooms. Once a fully functional restaurant is integrated, the house must be called "hotel". Unlike the traditional "guest house" in German-speaking countries, the Brazilian pousada offers no comparable "guest room". In Brazilian major cities, the hotels have largely displaced the Pousadas. A similar trend is also evident in the tourism sectors, such as Foz do Iguazu and Salvador. Visitors from abroad can only stay here for one or two nights. Contrary examples are Buzios, Paraty or Ilha Grande, where the average length of stay is seven days and relaxation is the focus. Here, innumerable small and mostly cozy pousadas accommodate the majority of the guests.

Lodge

We mainly found lodges in Amazonas and the Pantanal. They offer the best opportunity to learn about the local flora and fauna. They serve as a starting point for guided tours and excursions in the surroundings and the unique eco-systems. The lodges we have chosen offer hikes with expert explanations on fauna and flora, various canoe and boat trips, horseback riding, wildlife safaris by day and by night, piranha fishing, observation of river dolphins and visiting the local residents (caboclos) in the Amazonas region . Some jungle lodges offer additional trips into the jungle with overnight stays in the open. A very intense and impressive experience to live at night, with all its noise in a hammock. The standards of the lodges varies quite a lot, ranging from rustic and authentic to a passable middle class to quite luxurious accommodation. You have the choice between authenticity and comfort. Please note: simpler and more rustic accommodation will give you a more realistic and more impressive experience.
