Brazil Travel: Salvador

The African influenced Salvador is the capital of the northeastern state of Bahia and was the National Capital up until 1763. With about 2,9 Million citizens it is the third largest city in Brazil. One unique quality of Salvador is the separation between downtown (“cidade baixa“) and uptown (“cidade alta“), which are connected through the famous “Lacerda“ elevator. More than 900.000 tourists a month use this method of transportation during their trip to Brazil. As well as the annual and world renowned Carnaval, the city is well known for its colonial architecture. The cultural and tourist attractions in Salvador consist of the traditional artist quarter Pelourinho, a part of the colonial old town, which has belonged to the UNESCO World Heritage since 1985. We also recommend you experience a beautiful, Brazilian sunset from the lighthouse in the Barra district. The “Mercado Modelo“, the former trading centre for food and animals, is also worth a visit and offers quality Brazilian souvenirs. The Church “Nosso Senhor do Bonfim” is considered to be the most important part of Bahia. Throughout the year, the weather is warm  and usually, the temperature is no less than 20 degrees. The hottest time of the year is between the months of  December and March. During this time, the temperature can reach a daily maximum of 31 degrees (also where the most hours of sunshine are recorded). If you are travelling between May and June, we recommend you bring an umbrella as it tends to rain a lot at this time.
