Sao Luis is the capital of the northern state of Maranhao and has approximately 1.3 million inhabitants. The "City of Tiles" is situated on the eastern part of the island of the same name, in the Bay of Sao Marcos. Since 1997, the city centre is World Heritage Site by UNESCO. For one, the location is the starting point for excursions in the area, and also offers numerous tourist attractions. Shaping the cityscape are the beautiful Portuguese tiles in the historic centre "Praia Grande". The best place to start your tour is in the Casa do Maranhao, an information and exhibition centre where you get to know Brazilian culture and folklore. Sao Luis is the perfect location for art and culture lovers. Also interesting is the culture-rich historic museum with about 7,000 exhibitions.
