Brazil Travel Packages: Canoa Quebrada

This small fishing village with its pictorial name of Canoa Quebrada, meaning "broken canoe" in English, is located in the Northeastern state of Ceara. The coast is characterized by long, white and palm-fringed beaches, dunes and colorful rocky cliffs. The beauty of the place attracted dropouts and backpackers in the 1970s, who settled here. Although its infrastructure is well developed for tourism, Canoa Quebrada has retained its alternative charm and is known as the pearl of the east coast. Presently, about 5,000 people of different origins live here, mainly sustaining themselves from tourism, but also from fishing. The area includes a nature reserve of 70,000 hectares, so sustainable tourism and regulated growth are mandatory.
On the coast there are excellent conditions for various water sports and the rising sea winds on the cliffs are appreciated by paragliders. In the evening, visitors can end the day in the center of town along the main road in one of the restaurants or bars, listening to reggae or forro music.
The tropical coastal climate offers the best conditions for a sunny and varied beach getaway almost year round.
Canoa Quebrada is best reached via Fortaleza, the capital of Ceara. The small town is only about 100 miles (170 kilometers) south of the city, which has a well-known national and international airport.
