Brazil Travel Packages: Ilheus
Ilheus is located in the northeastern state of Bahia, some 190 miles (300 km) south of Salvador along the coast. Founded by the Portuguese around 1536, the city forms an integral part of the colonial heritage of Bahia. Today it is home to roughly 220,000 inhabitants.
The region was once considered the world's largest cocoa producer, but unfortunately in the 1990s the "Vassoura de Bruxa" fungus attacked most of the plantations and led to the collapse of the local cocoa industry. The region’s resilience in developing an alternative livelihood gave birth to the development of sustainable, culture-oriented tourism.
The city has become known as the setting for many novels by the world-famous writer Jorge Amado, among them "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon" and "The Violent Land".
The Jorge Amado Airport is located near the city center. It offers direct flights to Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Brasilia and Salvador, among others.
