Brazil Travel Packages: Itubera
Itubera is a municipality along the coast of the Northeastern state of Bahia, located at the mouth of the Rio Santarem, whose delta is covered with mangroves for miles. In the hinterland the small tributaries form some beautiful waterfalls. This confluence of waterways and the resulting abundance of water has earned the region the nickname "Capital das Aguas" (capital of the waterways).
Today, about 30,000 people live here, who, apart from small-scale agriculture and local businesses, sustain themselves on the growing tourism business in the region. The city originated from the presence of the indigenous Aimores tribe, and its name still comes from the local Tupi-Guarani language, meaning "Bright Waterfall."
After the arrival of the Portuguese in the 18th century, the region around Itubera developed into a producer of coffee and cocoa. However, trade collapsed from 1942 onwards after the BA-02 highway was built in the hinterland and the port in Itubera lost its importance. It was only after the 1950s, when production of carnations increased and yielded profits, that agriculture recovered. Cocoa, guarana, and many other different tropical fruits are still cultivated in the region.
It is not only the cultivation of crops that benefits from the tropical climate and fertile soil. The plant diversity is also reflected in the inner depths of the Atlantic Rainforest and the natural mangrove forests. The coexistence of the two ecosystems is home to an extremely rich fauna, which can be admired during a hike or a canoe trip through the mangroves.
