Brazil Travel Packages: Joao Pessoa
If you are planning a trip to the Northeast of Brazil, a visit to Joao Pessoa is worthwhile. This sun-drenched coastal city, the capital of the state of Paraiba, is located on the farthest edge of the South American continent. Here, the sun rises first and shines most of the year.
Before the arrival of the Europeans, of whom the French were the first, the area was inhabited by indigenous peoples of the Caetes tribe. The dense rainforest of the Mata Atlantica along the coast holds a treasure: Brazilwood, after which the whole country was named. This is how the conflict between the French and the Portuguese began, with the latter gaining the upper hand and finally founding the village at the end of the 16th century.
The town has developed from a small settlement into the economic center of the region and today Joao Pessoa is home to about 800,000 people who make their livelihoods from local trade, various industries and the increasing tourism demand. The community was once declared the second greenest capital of the world by the United Nations and is surrounded by two large nature reserves of the Mata Atlantica. In the historical center you can admire venerable churches and buildings from the colonial period. Miles of beaches border directly around the city and clear ocean water invites you to go for a swim. Refresh yourself in the morning with a dip in the cool water, absorb the midday heat in the shade and enjoy the local cuisine. In the afternoon you can take a walk through the historical center. You can end the day with a long walk along the shoreline.
