Brazil Travel Packages: Penedo
On the banks of the Rio Sao Francisco lies the small historic town of Penedo in the northeastern state of Alagoas. The history of the city begins with the arrival of the Portuguese, when, in 1501, Amerigo Vespucci set off from the coast here along a large river into the interior. This river, the Rio Sao Francisco, is one of Brazil's main rivers, with a length of over 1,925 miles (3,100 kilometers). It connects the coastal region to the hinterland, springs from the mountains of Minas Gerais and flows through the states of Bahia, Sergipe, Pernambuco and Alagoas. It is therefore one of the most important trade routes in the country.
Later, the settlement was declared a city in 1636. Originally with the name of Sao Francisco, the city was renamed Penedo in the late 19th century. The city center, with its many historic buildings, such as the Santa Maria dos Anjos church, attracts visitors every year and is home to many artists and writers. Today, Penedo's 65,000 inhabitants sustain themselves from fishing, sugar cane, rice and coconut cultivation and, increasingly, from tourism, which is promoted locally and sustainably in order to preserve the city's cultural and artistic heritage. In this traditionally Catholic city, many religious holidays are celebrated extensively, including Carnival with colorful parades.
