Brazil Travel Packages: Vitoria

Vitoria is located in the Southeast of Brazil in the state of Espirito Santo along the tropical Atlantic coast. Surrounded by mangroves, wet grasslands and the dense Mata Atlantica, almost 360,000 inhabitants live here. The main part, and oldest town center, is on the island of Santa Maria, on the river bearing the same name, which flows into the Atlantic. Numerous bridges connect the city center to the outer districts. Along the jagged coastline, small bays and beaches line up, separated by overgrown hills and granite rocks. For that reason the city is also called Little Rio de Janeiro. The founding of Vitoria and settlement of the state began 34 years after the arrival of the Europeans to Brazil in 1500. During their exploration, the Portuguese sought a safer place to protect themselves from attacks by the natives and other colonial powers, mainly Dutch and French. Later, the port became increasingly important as a transshipment point for goods such as gold and other ores from the hinterland. The colonial heritage of the region is omnipresent with a multitude of historical buildings, squares and churches. Today, Vitoria is still a commercial center and the most important port of ore exportation in Brazil. Although the up-and-coming region is still a blank spot on the international travel map, it is increasingly sustaining itself from tourism due to its natural beauty and its diverse, traditional and cultural groups. A visit to the city island is impressive and off the beaten track. Travelers can experience Vitoria individually by walking along the coastal paths or relax on the beach.
