Brazil Travel Packages: Bento Goncalves

In the deep South of Brazil, the mountainous region of Serra Gaucha is home to the small town of Bento Goncalves. It is located about 70 miles (110 kilometers) northwest of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The region was mainly settled by Central Europeans from Italy, Germany, France, Spain and Poland. Historically, the name of the city goes back to Bento Goncalves da Silva, one of the leaders of the Farrapen revolution (1835-1845) of rebels against the empire of Brazil at that time. The region’s Mediterranean climate, with lots of sun and sufficient rain, offers the best conditions for wine growing. The many Italian immigrants to the region took advantage of this and today the green hills of the Serra Gaucha around the Vale dos Vinhedos are the most famous wine region in Brazil. Vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris are cultivated.
The best way to explore the region is with a rental car. The streets and villages, at first sight, bring reminders of Northern Italy, while also reflecting the fascinating mix of Brazil, colonial times and European influences. Most of the wineries are family-run over many generations. Here, in addition to excellent wines, visitors can also discover and taste other culinary specialties.
