Due to the city’s altitude in the mountains, the winter (March to May) can be very cold. Nova Friburgo is considered the coldest city in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Most of the time, however, it is cooler at 8 °C to 10 °C (47 °F to 50 °F) and especially at night the temperatures drop significantly.
